Moonstone was named the state gem of Florida in 1970 after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on their historic moon landing. During the Art Nouveau period, moonstone was extremely popular and was used to decorate much of the jewely created by René Lalique. Many cultures still regard moonstone as a sacred and magical stone. Also known as "Selenite" and "Adularia", moonstone owes its name to the way light shimmers off its surface when the stone is moved.
